Boulder 420
The forecast called for a, "Purple Haze" and for once, the Colorado Weathermen were correct.
Each year, on April 20th students from the University of Colorado of Boulder are joined by marijuana enthusiasts from around the country for a cannabis celebration. Some make the marijuana migration to support the legalization of weed, others just want to watch, but most attend the event so they can get high as balls in a public place.
It was reported that approximately 10,000 people attended this years smoke out, making it one of the most popular 420s on record and leaving the CU Basketall Program jealous of such attendance. 420 has had to move locations in the past few years in order to accommodate such large crowds.
There is always the presence of the police at the event but usually no enforcement. At this years event there was no arrests and no citations for possession. When there is such a large gathering of people the police are more worried about crowd control rather than minor citations. According to a 43 year old dude wearing a Grateful Dead T-shirt that I once met, Boulder County Law states, "Having less than an ounce of marijuana on your person is basically the same fine as littering... man!" The last thing the police want to do is back up the courts with these types of cases. Furthermore, if the police did start to arrest people they stand to have a riot of 10,000 angry potheads. Might not exactly be the most ferocious riot but some of those hippies can be deadly with a frisbee from distances of up to 200 yards.
